The Goal: Owning It All

Picture the Monopoly board as your battleground. Your mission: to be the last tycoon standing after everyone else has run out of cash. How do you get that win? Buying up properties around the board and turning them into gold mines that charge rent whenever someone lands on them.

Winning in the Monopoly board game boils down to making smart moves and managing cash. Buying properties and building houses and hotels increases your income whenever an opponent lands on your properties. Playing your cards right means being strategic about where you invest and when you pass. Keeping an eye on your funds ensures you won't go bankrupt when you land on someone else's property empire.

Setting The Game

The game is for two to eight players. Each player gets to choose a token to represent themselves and place it in the "GO" space.

The players will decide on the Banker, a player who is also responsible for managing the bank's money, properties, houses, and hotels. Each player is given a total of $1,500, divided as follows:

  • two each of $500, $100, and $50
  • six of $20
  • five each of $10, $5, and $1

Game Start

The game starts with the Banker, where each player throws the dice, and the highest roller becomes the lucky first mover. Each player’s token starts on the “GO” corner and takes turns rolling the dice to move the token to the number of spaces indicated by the dice. Based on the spot your token lands on, you can buy unowned properties, pay or collect rent settle taxes, pick up a Chance or Community Chest card, or go to jail.

If you roll the same number on both dice, move your token as usual. Then, you get another roll and move again similarly. If you throw doubles three times in a row, you must go directly to jail.

GO

When you land on or pass “GO”, you’ll receive a $200 paycheck. This only happens once per lap around the board. If you roll the dice and go beyond GO, landing either two spaces after it on Community Chest or seven spaces after on Chance and receive a card that says "Advance to GO," you will earn $200 for the first pass and an additional $200 when the card sends them to GO again.

Income Tax

If you stop on Income Tax, you can choose between two actions: you may pay the $200 tax or pay 10% of your total worth to the Bank.

Chance & Community Chest

When you land on either of these spaces, take the top card from the deck. Each card has different instructions you should follow—pay taxes, advance to GO, or even get thrown in jail. Once you’re done, return the card facedown to the bottom of the deck.

Buying Your Properties

Land on an unowned property? You can buy it from the Bank and get a Title Deed card. If you decide to not buy the property, it will be auctioned to the highest bidder, who pays the Bank and gets the Title Deed card. Anyone can bid, even those who initially did not buy, and bidding can start at any amount.

Paying & Collecting Rent

When you land on someone else's property, you have to pay the rent based on what's listed on the property's Title Deed card. If your property's mortgage is active, the card is flipped upside down, and you cannot collect rent from your opponents.

Owning all properties of the same color lets you charge double the rent on unimproved lots if they're not mortgaged. Houses or hotels spike the rental price up significantly. But remember, the owner can't get rent if they don't ask for it before the next player rolls the dice.

Go To Jail

Land on the “Go to Jail” or roll doubles three times in a row, and you end up “In Jail.” Even if you land on the jail space during your play, you're only visiting and will keep playing on your next turn.

You can throw doubles on any of your next three turns, use your “Get Out of Jail Free” card, or just pay the $50 fine to get out of jail.

House and Hotels

Own all properties of the same color group? Congratulations! You can now buy houses from the Bank. This means you can collect double rent charges from an opponent who lands on your property.

Make sure to build houses on each property in the color group so you can add a second house. Players can also upgrade to a hotel after adding four houses to each property. Only one hotel per property is allowed.

But what happens when the Bank runs out of houses to sell? Wait until someone else gives back or sells their houses to the Bank. If more players want to buy houses or hotels than the Bank has, they'll be auctioned off to whoever will pay the most.

Selling Your Property

Don’t need a property anymore? You can sell properties that don't have houses, like railroads and utilities, directly to another player for any price. But remember, if there are houses on any property in a set of the same color, sell them to the Bank first. At any time, houses and hotels can be sold to the Bank for half the price they were bought for.

Mortgaging Unimproved Lands

If you need extra cash, you can use your bare land as a mortgage with the Bank anytime. Before you can mortgage an improved property, all buildings need to be sold to the Bank first for half their purchase price. No rent cash can be collected from a mortgaged property or utilities.

To remove the mortgage, the owner should give the Bank the mortgage amount plus an interest of 10%. Once every property in a set isn't mortgaged, you can start buying houses or hotels again. You can also sell the mortgaged properties to another player and they will pay the mortgage and the 10% interest to lift it.

Bankruptcy

Run out of dough? If you can't pay what you owe to a player or the Bank, you're bankrupt and out of the game. Give up all your properties to the player you owe, including properties and any buildings that need to be sold back to the Bank for half the money.

When it's the Bank you can't repay, all your things, except buildings, get auctioned off straight away. Only the Bank can loan money to players, by mortgaging property. Players can't borrow or lend money among themselves.

How To Win: Monopoly Strategies

You’re the ultimate tycoon of the game when you’re the last player standing with money in your pockets and properties in your portfolio! Here are some winning strategies you can do to be crowned the Monopoly champion:

  1. Invest in properties strategically: Focus on acquiring full sets of properties, especially those with higher rent values. Build houses and hotels to increase your earnings and put pressure on opponents who land on your spaces.
  2. Manage your money wisely: Keep a balance between investing in properties and maintaining enough cash flow to cover expenses like rent, taxes, and potential fines. Avoid overspending early on and prioritize saving for crucial moments.
  3. Make trades and negotiations: Utilize your bargaining skills to strike advantageous deals with other players. Seek properties that complete your sets and don't be afraid to propose creative trades or offer attractive incentives to persuade your opponents.
  4. Stay out of jail: Avoid landing in jail whenever possible, as it restricts your opportunities to collect rent and make strategic moves. Consider using "Get out of Jail Free" cards or negotiating with players who hold valuable properties near the jail space.
  5. Stay vigilant and adapt your strategy: Continuously assess the game's dynamics and adjust your approach. Pay attention to your opponents' actions, their properties, and their financial status.
